Why Compost?

Organic waste comprises 30 percent of the household trash going into landfills and incinerators, where it has no chance to decompose and offers very little BTU value. Homeowners who compost not only extend the life of our landfills and reduce the cost of collecting household garbage, but also recycle the nutrients in organic waste to create a valuable soil amendment for their gardens. “TCF is about creating community partnerships and programs. We want to help people bring rain barrels and composters to where they live and work to help create healthier, more vibrant communities and neighborhoods.”

Brook McDonald
President/CEO, The Conservation Foundation

“Rain barrels can provide immense water savings for communities, that’s why I have one at my house. We are proud to partner with the County and The Conservation Foundation to offer you these in expensive, easy to use environmental additions to your home.”

Dan Hebreard
President, Forest Preserve District of DuPage County

Why Use a Rain Barrel?

Rain barrels are large containers that capture storm water from roofs that would otherwise be lost as runoff. The 55-gallon Upcycle Products Inc. rain barrels sold through The Conservation Foundation are modern food-grade barrels and are sealed and safe around children. They are repurposed, recycled, and recyclable, and come equipped with spigots, screens to prevent mosquito breeding, and overflow valves.

Setup is easy by diverting water from your downspout to fill the rain barrel. A hose spigot on the front makes the water easy to access and use for watering flowers and gardens, or washing cars, windows, and even pets.

About 40 percent of total household water use during the summer months is for watering lawns and gardens. The Conservation Foundation partners with local communities every spring to sell rain barrels to homeowners to help with water conservation.
